Tackling Tethered Oral Tissues: Identifying Lip and Tongue Ties in Your Little Ones

2 minute read

Located in Fort Mill, SC, Lotus Dental Associates prides itself on patient education to ensure optimal oral health outcomes for all our clients. Today we focus our spotlight on a common but often undiagnosed condition in children: Lip and Tongue Ties.

What are Lip and Tongue Ties?

Lip and Tongue Ties, medically known as Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs), occur when the piece of skin under the baby’s tongue or between the upper lip and gum (known as the frenulum) is too short. This can limit the free movement of the tongue or the lip and may interfere with breastfeeding in infants and speech development in older children.

Identifying Lip and Tongue Ties

Many TOTs can be detected by observing your child’s behavior or by physical examination. Here are some potential signs:

Frequent nursing in infants:

Infants with TOTs may feed more frequently as they may have difficulty extracting milk. Mothers may experience painful or damaged nipples post feeding.

Colic or excessive gas:

The strained nursing may cause the baby to consume air, manifesting as colic, excessive gas, or reflux symptoms.

Delayed speech:

The restricted tongue movement can affect proper speech development in toddlers as they may struggle to make certain sounds.

The compassionate team at Lotus Dental Associates is skilled at diagnosing and treating lip and tongue ties.
